September 28---December 11, 1793

Dear Diary,     Post grandfather's death we had a burial for him. It was sad but I knew that I had to get home to my mother. Once I had left and finally got home to Philadelphia. I went back to the coffee house which ended up in me meeting with Eliza who hugged the air out of me but then she told me that mother was gone she had gone over to the Ludington's to be with me.       This news shocked me but I was also glad that she was alive. A few days passed and both me and Eliza started to help the sick. The first being Joseph's sons and Nell who we ended up taking care of every so often.       After a while, the fever was finally over with it was finally winter. Another shock was one day, a carriage came and someone stepped out that someone was mother.  Once she spotted me she ran up to me and hugged the lights out of me just as Eliza did. We have finally been reunited, once again The reason I chose this book is that when ...

Dear Diary,        It has been a few weeks since my last entry. A little summary of what has occurred, The doctors were considering putting me in an orphanage due to a lack of guardian(grandfather has been weakened) but thankfully grandfather refused and since now I am fully recovered we are going to start to head back to Philadelphia.        Right now we are staying at the Ogilvie mansion so we can rest but way into the night I heard the noise of the window opening but it was fairly dark so I couldn't see who it was.  Then, I heard them utter about how no one is here so they could take what they want without interference.  I didn't like the idea of that but I didn't want to interfere because grandfather could hear and possibly get hurt by those guys.      After about ten minutes they took most of the stuff in the room but then I saw that one of the guys was heading for the chess board that grandfathe...

Dear Diary,     After the doctors and the coach kicked us out, we started to make our way back home, even in the heat.  It was difficult we were walking for miles with no food or water. On the way, their grandfather started to look flushed so I lay him down under a nearby tree. Now it was time to find some food and water. This task wasn't as hard as I perceived it to be.       Luckily there were some willow trees around which as grandfather once said "if you follow the willows you will find fresh water." Once I grabbed some water I saw that there was a bush next to me it seemed to have what looked to be pears. Once I grabbed a pear I start to feel drowsy. I tried to pick up my feet to move, then all of a sudden everything suddenly went black.       Which bothered me because grandfather was still under the tree! I woke up suddenly in what looked to be someone else's home. After a while, I slowly started to gain consciousness a...

Dear Diary,        Today I overheard grandfather and mother discussing that they would send me over to the Ludington's. I protested because I didn't want to leave mother sick by herself. Then mother told me to go get packed, reluctantly I went to my room and started to pack. After I finished packing I waited outside with Eliza.  After a while Grandfather was finally ready for the long road ahead. We finally got into the carriage that had been waiting for us.       A little while later, we were miles out of town when suddenly we were stopped by what looked to be doctors. They asked us if we were sick we of course said no but they took us out anyway, because, they believed wholeheartedly that my grandfather was infected and had spread the disease to me! They later said that we had to go back to town! I yelled that town was many miles away but they didn't care and walked away, leaving us in dread. How are we supposed to get back? For...

September 6,1793

Dear Diary,     Today has been dreadful! The reason for this being is that my mother is ill and I am scared that she might end up like Polly dead. She might even have that fever that grandfather was talking about! I am hoping that the doctor we called for arrives quickly so we can be sure that mother isn't dying...      It is now nighttime. Eliza has gone to her house and the doctor has arrived. He says that "she does have a fever but we don't know if it's yellow fever." That statement made my whole body shiver. Mother is ill and that must be why before the doctor came she told me to get away from her.

Dear Diary,       Today mother let me go to the marketplace. It took some convincing but she eventually let me go. I finally came across the marketplace, I had walked to the butcher's table. Once I had got there and as he was cutting the meat everyone stopped while the bell rang, the butcher stated that the bell rings for every year the person lived for.... twenty-one.... the bell rang twenty-one times.       After that, the butcher also stated that the person who died could have been a fever victim. After that statement,  I was moving on to the next seller but an apple was taken from my basket, I look over and it was Nathaniel!  Nathaniel is a great guy, he likes to tease me but I don't mind (I have taken quite the liking to him).       Mother doesn't like him because she doesn't want us to end up like her and father (father was a carpenter and has been dead for years now). She wanted me to marry one of the Og...

Dear Diary,     As I was mourning Polly's death, I could hear grandfather speaking with some of the customers. Then all of a sudden someone yelled "it might be yellow fever!"  grandfather yelled back "it was not yellow fever!". Back and forth they went so I decided to just wait for it to die down after it died down. Grandfather then started talking about how someone dies every August. This made me feel slight distress because all I could hear was the faint ringing of the bell that signals that someone had died...
